Frequently Asked Questions

What is the amount and purpose of funding?

The purpose of the funding is to increase the quality and accessibility of humanitarian research and is open to women or small teams led by women. Funding is a contribution to your project and is between €500 and €1000 per project.

What can the funds be used for?

You must use the funds for the purposes you told us you would in your application – although in principle there is no restriction on what that purpose(s) is, provided it is to increase the quality and/or accessibility of your research. This includes but is not limited to paying for:

  • increasing data collection sample sizes
  • travel for data collection
  • hiring enumerators
  • specialist software licenses or specialist types of analysis
  • translators and translations
  • purchase of specialist skills or services that enhance the research
  • quality assurance services
  • professional editing
  • other expenses linked to increasing quality and accessibility

Are there any restrictions on the use of funds?

The funds cannot be used to pay wages/stipends for the primary researcher(s) or anything illegal. Primary researcher(s) are classed as anyone whose name will appear as an author in the final research publication.

What are the key application dates?

Applications will open on 17th February 2025 and close on 2nd March 2025. Discussions with shortlisted applications will occur in March and the 2025 grantees will be announced at the end of March.

How can applications be made?

HII will announce the opening of the application round on February 17th on LinkedIn. This will include details on how to apply. The application form is short and focused on information about your research project and how you intend to spend the funds.

How many Focus Areas does the research need to cover?

Research need only address one of the 2025 focus areas to be eligible.

What type of entities are eligible? Are individuals eligible?

All entities and individuals are eligible. PhD students, individuals (with previous research experience), private sector researchers, research institutes and universities are all eligible for this funding.

Are there any other conditions?

Research projects must be entirely completed by the end of 2025.

There are other standard terms and conditions that apply and these will be contained in the Grant Agreement for those receiving funds. These include liability, relationship between HII and the researcher(s) etc. HII makes no claim to the copyright and/or intellectual property of the research project.

What attribution and distribution is required?

The Humanitarian Impact Institute must be noted as a co-funder of the research in all outputs and where it does not prevent barriers to publishing in journals. HII will also jointly promote the research outputs and support researchers to increase coverage of their research project. Journal publication is encouraged but not required if alternative dissemination strategies are planned.

What countries and nationalities are eligible?

Research can be on/in/about any country or group of countries in the world, provided it matches one of the key Focus Areas outlined above. All nationalities are eligible, but researchers must pass a standard background check.

Is primary data collection required?

No, provided the research advances one of the key Focus Areas (outlined above); uses an academic quality research approach; and primary data is not needed to bring new insights to light. Primary research is however encouraged where relevant, useful and appropriate – but is not necessary to secure funding.
