Humanitarian AI and Digital Economies

Overview

Our Humanitarian AI and Digital Economies work is a reflection of the very real and immediate opportunities for artificial intelligence (AI) to transform both humanitarian responses and development programs. AI is already, and will increasingly become, a force multiplier for humanitarians and development professionals – leading to faster advances in economic development in many contexts.

Current versions of Generative AI, Interactive AI (and some reactive machine AI) will soon grow into a capability approximating limited forms of Artificial General Intelligence. This growth in capabilities is happening now and will be in place within the next 2-4 years.

The most difficult part of the growth in AI capability (the machine learning and deep learning including use of large language models and AI model training) is being paid for by large resource-rich companies. These companies are creating platforms that can be harnessed for economic growth in developing countries at a low relative cost. For example, to design products and deliver digital services in ways that were not previously accessible for much of the world’s population.

What AI can do then, is to provide livelihood opportunities that don’t currently exist for many, or increase the quality, reach and value of existing income generating activities for others. In practice, this will mean competing in global and regional market places based on price – an advantage those living in emerging and underdeveloped countries have.
