Gender Based Violence
Gender Based Violence
Overview
Gender based violence is a plague on humanity, inflicted on survivors with the result that their health is compromised and their dignity and autonomy are restricted. In humanitarian emergencies (both sudden onset and protracted), gender based violence soars.
Society and community ability to protect women and girls is often reduced in humanitarian emergencies by the conflict or natural disaster washing away focus on basic protection. Intimate partner violence also rises in these settings when trauma begets trauma – always with women and girls having violence forced upon them.
The Humanitarian Impact Institute works with humanitarian and development actors to ensure survivor centric and directed programming, trauma informed approaches and to implement effective protection measures for prevention – and that all underpinned by effective monitoring and evaluative indicators and approaches incorporated into MEAL plans.
